… ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’(Matthew 22: 37-39)
With lovingkindness have I drawn thee.”-Jeremiah 31:3
We live in a world full of hurting and broken people. In fact, each of you reading this have probably, at some point in our lives, suffered a period of hurt, disappointment, abandonment, rejection or brokenness (if not all of them). While it was probably tough for us to get to the place where we saw the light at the end of the tunnel, it was usually someone (or a couple of someones) praying, walking, and LOVING US THROUGH. If we’re honest, had it not been for that LOVE, we probably wouldn’t have made it. What am I getting at? One of the most important jobs that we have is to “SHOW THE LOVE OF GOD TO OTHERS.” This does not mean that we have to act like Rev. Right or Sister Sappy. But, we need to TAKE EVERY OPPORTUNITY POSSIBLE TO LOVE PEOPLE.
Now, for some of us that might be hard, because it was probably people that caused us to be hurt in the first place. I OVASTAND (what my Jamaican brothers/sisters say; meaning I comprehend and fully understand). We have all been mistreated or been hurt by someone close to us. If not, keep living; you’ll have your day. However, WE CANNOT ALLOW THE PAINS/HURT OF OUR PAST TO PREVENT US FROM LIVING/LOVING. I put those two words (living/loving) together because YOU CAN ONLY REALLY EXPERIENCE LIFE WHEN YOU ALLOW YOURSELF TO LOVE. And, let’s be REAL, what THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE. Not only will that LOVE DRAW THEM TO GOD, but it will HEAL THEM IN THE PROCESS. In fact, that LOVE IS A BRIGHT LIGHT THAT DRAWS PEOPLE TO THE KINGDOM LIKE MOTHS TO A FLAME (that light is love-genuine, sincere, authentic love).
Our love does not necessarily have to be some grandeur act or super sacrificial deed. Our love can be shown simply and greatly when we do the smallest of things, such as feeding the homeless, visiting the sick, buying grocery for someone who is struggling financially; or a kind, encouraging word offered to someone who is going through a tough time. When we do these things, not only do we “allow the light of God” to shine, but we OPEN UP THE HEART OF OTHERS TO BE RECEPTIVE TO THE “LOVE OF GOD”. To be more specific, the coworker who doesn’t go to church will be more RECEPTIVE TO THE WORD OF GOD after they have been a RECIPIENT OF THE LOVE OF GOD from His children.
I bring up the subject of LOVE, because I often see/hear “Christians” brow beating people, who are usually ‘unchurched’, with scriptures. Jesus, our TEMPLATE FOR LOVE, dealt with all sorts of people and He didn’t “brow beat” them with the Torah (the Jewish holy book). In fact, He spoke in parables (stories that illustrated situations and circumstances that He wanted the people to understand and learn lessons from). Why? In I Corinthians 2: 14, it says that “..the natural man receives not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness to him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (I Corinthians 2:14). In other words, when people are not walking with God, they are unable to comprehend the knowledge of God. So, next time you feel the urge to “bully people with the bible”, TRY LOVING THEM.
